An Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM) is a type of EV motor that uses wound copper coils in the rotor instead of permanent magnets to generate a magnetic field. Used by manufacturers like BMW and Nissan, these motors eliminate rare-earth material dependency, offer high efficiency at high speeds, and allow for better coasting, as the magnetic field can be turned off. 

Key Features and Advantages

• No Rare Earth Magnets: EESMs reduce supply chain risks and environmental impact by utilizing copper windings rather than materials like neodymium.

• High Efficiency & Range: They are particularly efficient for highway driving because they avoid the constant magnetic drag found in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs).

• Controllability: The rotor's magnetic field can be adjusted in real-time, allowing for optimized energy consumption.

• Performance: These motors are capable of achieving high RPMs and, as shown in the Nissan Ariya, offer power densities comparable to permanent magnet motors (e.g., 239 horsepower/178 kW).

• Cooling & Durability: EESMs are often oil-cooled to manage heat in the rotor, and the designs are built to withstand high speeds (over 12,000 RPM). 

EESM vs. Other Motors

• PMSM: Unlike PMSMs, EESMs allow for superior "free-rolling" or coasting, as the rotor field can be disabled.

• Induction Motors: EESMs offer better efficiency at high speeds compared to induction motors.
